  1. Labor Day Weekend

    September 8, 2011 by frecklesandsunshine

We had a great family weekend. Lots of adventures and quality time together. That’s what three day weekends are for, right?

On Monday, we had every intention of going to downtown Louisville for the Labor Day Parade. It is their 76th, which I find fairly impressive for a town of this size.

Sadly, the parade coincided with morning nap time. Olivia’s, not ours. We joined up with the fun at the Community Park though. There were vendor booths, live music, a kids play area with climbing walls and bounce houses, and a….splash pad!

You remember #32, don’t you? You know, “Take Olivia to the splash pad on Pearl Street Mall once she is walking. (Any day now.)” Well, my friends, that day has come. I know, I know. It’s not Pearl Street Mall. But, with only 16 days left of summer, I’m going to take what I can get.

Besides, homegirl is a walking machine! Bonus: she loves bath time. Obviously, when you combine those two things you get a child who will race into a splash pad all giggles and splashing.

    Or not.

This was about as close as she got on her own two feet. Even in Daddy’s arms she wasn’t quite sure at first.

She warmed up to it eventually, but never really toddled around like I was expecting.

Ah, well. There’s always next summer!

  2. Summer Fun List Update

    September 2, 2011 by frecklesandsunshine

Just because a girl goes back to work doesn’t mean she’s all teach and no fun, you know. If we teachers didn’t make time for fun, we would lose our minds.

And, yes, I realize Labor Day is on Monday and that is the symbolic end of summer. I, however, am giving myself until the first official day of fall to complete as much of my list as possible. For those of you keeping track, that’s September 23rd.

Until then, here’s an update on what has been crossed off the list in the last few weeks.

  3. Mad Creek Mamas

    July 25, 2011 by frecklesandsunshine

When you become a mother, it can be all consuming. It is very easy to get so caught up in your child and the rest of life’s trappings that you forget to take time for yourself. Whether you sneak out of the house for a walk or coffee, go to the gym, shop ’til you drop, or have a spa day, the time you spend on your own recharging is invaluable. It makes you a better mother, a better wife, and a better person.

My friend, Jenn, and I had talked about having an overnight staycation while the guys took care of the kids. Instead, we took both families up to Steamboat Springs where Jenn and Dave have a condo. Our family has been up to the Steamboat condo a number of times, most recently for a snowshoeing adventure.

Jenn and I had Saturday to ourselves while the guys wrangled the ankle biters. Steamboat in summer is chock-full of activities. Mountain biking, fishing, hiking…the list goes on and on. We started our day with a hike.

  4. #44 Take Olivia to Story Time at the Library

    July 21, 2011 by frecklesandsunshine

I grew up in Phoenix, where the summer temperatures soar into triple digits and then just keep going. On the hottest days, I would climb on my bike and pedal my way down to the public library. The library was a perfect place to hang out during the summer. They had air conditioning and books. I really didn’t need much else.

Libraries have only gotten better in the last twenty or thirty years. Now, in addition to books, you can check out DVD’s. There are computers with internet access and downloadable e-books online.  And nearly everything that a library offers, from books to services, is free. Gratis. Nada. Why more people don’t use the library boggles my mind.

When I learned I was pregnant, one of the first things I thought about was the books that I wanted Olivia to have in her bedroom library. So far, her collection includes some of the best children’s authors. Eric Carle, Kevin Henkes, Margaret Wise Brown, and Karen Katz are all represented. Even though Olivia has no shortage of books here at home, I want her to love and appreciate the library. It is after all, the best place to cool off in the summer.

Last week, I took her down to our local library for story time.

Our library offers a few different story times. The one for toddlers falls during O’s nap, so we went to the all ages time. She was by far the youngest child there. Most of the kids were at least three years old. The librarian read a few books and Olivia seemed interested. By the third book though, she was more interested in playing with the kids than listening to the story.

We snuck out of the reading room and went to pick some books to check out. There were many board books to choose from.

Did you know you can get books for infants at the library? I didn’t realize that most libraries carry a selection of board books for babies until I walked through looking for something new to read for O’s bedtime story.

Olivia picked out a few she liked. She is obsessed with baby face books right now.

I’m not sure that Olivia is ready for story time on a regular basis, but I hope that one day she loves the library as much as I do.

The Summer Fun List is one shorter today!

  5. 45. Dinner with the ladies in Denver

    July 13, 2011 by frecklesandsunshine

Olivia is almost eleven months old and I’m pretty sure that I just had my first night out without Tim or Olivia.

What the hell took me so long?

I met my friend, Jenn, and a gaggle of other ladies at an Indian restaurant in Denver.

The food was good and the company was better. It was good to have some girl talk. #45: Crossed off.
